Land-based functionality at sea

We offer the market a true alternative to land-based closed-containment facilities for post-smolt and grow-out production. Many land-based projects demand scalable systems that can be expanded in step with production goals, and allow for flexible fish transfer between tanks.

Hexacage delivers exactly this — without occupying land area or requiring lengthy permitting processes for expansion.
We provide equivalent tank design, environment, and biological control — but place the system at sea, inside steel float collars engineered for harsh conditions and certified for Hs 4.3.

And if needs change, the system is relocatable, offering flexibility over time.

Scalability

We offer a scalable system that can be expanded in line with your desired production capacity.

Hexacage is a modular, flexible solution, adaptable to different operating models, production cycles, and growth phases.

The system is based on a hexagonal module that can operate independently or be connected with additional units to form large production platforms with up to six producing modules.

It is also possible to integrate customized barge solutions for feed storage and sludge handling — with or without on-site operations and accommodation facilities.

Energy-efficient design

By placing the tanks within steel float collars at sea, we operate directly in the water environment itself.

With subsurface water intake, we ensure highly energy-efficient water flow in and out of the tanks. Using modern, low-energy pumps, we can circulate even more water through each tank without significantly increasing power consumption.

Hexacage is capable of exchanging the entire tank volume — 21,000 m³ — in just 45 minutes.

Recyclable aand built for longevity

The entire Hexacage structure is made from steel — one of the most versatile materials for this type of construction and also the easiest to recycle and repurpose.

The design offers a lifespan comparable to modern vessels, with an expected operational life of 40–50 years. The structure is built according to the Norwegian Maritime Authority’s requirements, meaning dry docking is not needed for the first 20 years.


All required inspections can be carried out onboard, during operation. Thanks to its durability and recyclability, steel will retain a high residual value in the future — it does not pose a waste problem.

Safe operations

People are one of the most valuable assets in any company.

Each Hexacage module includes a working deck surrounding the tank that is 8 meters wide. With a lightship weight of over 1,000 tons, the unit remains very stable with minimal movement at sea.

Operations can be performed under safe, spacious, and stable conditions, with no need for a workboat during regular daily tasks.

The hexacage is designed as a modern land-based facility, for the best possible control on the water flow, the vessel environment and the biology of the fish.
